The River Knows My Name
I went down to the river to find my own face, and found someone else’s. It was one night. Nobody promised anything, and somehow that was the point. Some doors don’t open to let you stay; they open once, and you walk on a little lighter.
The song began as a slow midnight blues. It only came alive when the choir arrived, as if the water had been singing underneath all along. I kept the small cracks in it. They belong to that night.

The river knows my name
It whispers through the midnight rain
The moon was floating on the lake
Like an old dream still awake
I came to find my face tonight
Beneath the silver borrowed light
I walked down where the waters swayed
And watched my shadow drift away
The river knows my name
Like teardrops falling in the rain
It washed away the fear in me
And showed the woman I could be
The river knows my name
Like a long-forgotten flame
You kissed the silence back to me
And gave the dark a melody
Your eyes were quiet, dark and kind
Like candlelight I left behind
You kissed me once beneath that moon
And woke a song I almost knew
No promise made, no vow to keep
No lonely secret buried deep
And what I thought I'd never see
Rose like a song inside of me
The river knows my name
Like teardrops falling in the rain
It washed away the fear in me
And showed the woman I could be
The river knows my name
Like a long-forgotten flame
You kissed the silence back to me
And gave the dark a melody
Some doors don't open to let us stay
They open once and light the way
I came here looking for your face
But found a quiet hidden place
The river knows my name
Like teardrops falling in the rain
It washed away the fear in me
And showed the woman I could be
The river knows my name
Like a long-forgotten flame
You kissed the silence back to me
And set the buried fire free
The river knows my name
And wakes a long-forgotten flame
